Abdominal pseudocyst: a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunting.

Abdominal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pseudocyst is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunting. It is well known in children but uncommon in adults. We present a 30-year-old woman with abdominal distension, vomiting and confusion caused by her developing an abdominal CSF pseudocyst, 13 years after her last shunt revision. Adult neurologists need to be aware of this late complication.

Listeria monocytogenes: a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt in children.

We report a case of ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt infection in a 3-year-old boy caused by the food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, subsequent to acute peritonitis. This unusual presentation of central nervous system (CNS) listeriosis underlines the ability of the bacteria to form and survive within biofilms on indwelling medical devices. Bacterial persistence may lead to treatment fail...

Acute Epidural Hematoma after Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Insertion: a Case Report

Background & Importance: Acute epidural hematoma is a very rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion. The insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt can cause sudden decompression of the brain, subsequent to which epidural hematoma occurs due to CSF drainage. To our knowledge, there are only a few cases of acute epidural hematoma in the literature which required acute e...

Rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt: Catheter protrusion to subcutaneous tissue – Case report

BACKGROUND Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a day-to-day procedure performed by a neurosurgeon. The most frequent associated complications are obstructive and infectious. Although rare, there are well-reported complications related to the poor positioning of the distal catheter, with perforation of organs and tissues. Still rarer are the complications related to the migration of this catheter...

Retrograde migration of ventriculoperitoneal shunt to the neck. Case report.

We report a patient, given a ventriculoperitoneal shunt at the neonatal period, who presented with a painless subcutaneous mass on his neck. Plain radiographs of the cervical region showed that the swelling was made up by a migrated and coiled peritoneal catheter. We briefly discuss the proposed mechanism for this complication and suggest that this occurrence must be taken into account at the t...
